The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Title: The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya

Genre: Comedy, Romance, High School.
Studio: Kyoto Animation
Episodes: 14 episodes

Plot summary:

Kyon is an ordinary human being attending the first year of high school. While everyone in the class is introducing themselves, the turn falls onto a beautiful girl sitting behind him. She introduces herself as: Haruhi Suzumiya and promptly declares that she has no interest in humans and unless they're aliens, time travelers or espers, they shouldn't even bother talking to her.
However, Kyon does not heed her warning and talks to our Shoujo main character and unintentianally gives her an idea to start her own club: The SOS Brigade, whose function remains a huge mystery to Kyon for most of the anime. However it does change his life dramatically. With the formation of the SOS Brigade and the appearance of the colorful, weird and unbelievable characters, Kyon's life is forever altered.

Story:

This is not your everyday anime. Don't be fooled by the cute loli type characters and Kyoto Animation artwork. The story is weird, sometimes hard to follow, will leave you wondering what you're looking at, but it's truly a thrilling ride. It is packed interesting characters, unbelievable scenarios and tons of comedy.
As I discovered after watching it the first time and being a bit confused, the episode can be watched in two different ways. One is how it was aired in Japan (this is the order that Haruhi announces at the end of each episode) and the chronological one (Kyon's version). I first watched Haruhi's version and the second time Kyon's, but with his version I felt I was being robbed of a satisfactory ending. You should try both versions and see which one works for you.
There are 14 episodes in total and each one revolves around Haruhi trying to find ways cure her melancholy in ways which usually involve unreasonable request from the Brigade members, torturing Mizuru into cosplay and sending Kyon on errands while searching all the time for aliens, time travelers and espers.

Rating: 10+ for originality and an 8 for the overall storyline.

Characters:

All the characters are likable, but there's sadly not much character developement throughout the series. The characters have all unique characteristics that sets them apart from others. Most attention is given to Haruhi and Kyon, being the two main characters. The other characters were kind of stereotyped, Mikuru being the utterly cute, clumsy but sexy dream girl, Nagato the mysterious silent type and Koizumi as the easygoing eye candy. Yet if we take into account their 'special' identities, these characters are not so normal as they appear.

Rating: 8

Art:

The characters are nicely drawn, so was the background, but not being a big fan of CG effects, I found the parts where they used them less appealing and they kind of diminished the quality of the episodes they were used in. What I really liked, and what we sadly don't see enough, is the change in hairstyles and clothing. In the first episode Haruhi's hairstyle was different every day. We also see the change in clothing during the seasons, also in their school uniforms. And who can forget the costumes that Mikuru had to wear.

Overall, it was a nicely colored and clean drawn anime.

Rating: 9

Sound:

In my opinion, the soundtrack fit well with the anime, especially the cute ending song "Hare Hare Yukai", truly showing off Haruhi's character. There were also those two nice songs that she sang during the school festival that I really liked. The rest of the sountrack was moderate.
